Before I launched this blog in October last year I was undecided whether to use the domain System0.net or my own name Kevin Muldoon.com. I finally decided to use the domain System0 as I thought most posts would be related to my web projects and so it felt more appropriate to use than my own name.

However in the last few months I have started posting a wide range of topics on here. Some random rants and thoughts, my personal life and my travels. Things which are perhaps not suitable for System0, which has always been the home of my online presence. Which is why I have decided to change the focus of this blog.

The majority of posts have been moved to the domain KevinMuldoon.com, which is where I will be posting regularly from now on.

In August I acquired the domain System0.com so I thought this was a great opportunity to switch to the more popular domain extension. System0 will remain my online company name and I will continue to post about news, jobs and developments of my websites on here.

I have temporarily redirected the domain system0.net to kevinmuldoon.com so that most subscribers know where I have moved and why but after a few months it will redirect back to system0.com.

Confused? Don’t worry. Essentially this blog has split into two :

System0.com : All news regarding System0. You can subscribe at http://www.system0.com/feed/.

KevinMuldoon.com – The main place I will be blogging. I will be posting about my personal life (travelling, interests, films etc) and sometimes give my view on the latest blogging and web development news. I will occasionally pass on random web development and tech tips too. You can subscribe to this blog at http://www.kevinmuldoon.com/feed/.

At the moment KevinMuldoon.com is using a free wordpress theme from Brandon Cox. It’s quite simplistic but that’s one of the reasons I like it i.e. it’s a clean template and the main focus is on the content.

If you have any questions regarding this move please let me know

I’ve ran a few blogs over the last few years, most notably the blog for my old poker forums. At the moment I have a few blogs however my main one, BloggingTips, is about a year and a half old now. The blog has had dozens of guest posters and I have written many posts myself about the benefits of guest posts. Which is why I’m kind of embarassed to admit that I never got round to writing any myself until today. I was writing so many posts for BloggingTips that I never set aside time to write posts for other blogs and that was clearly a big mistake. Although the blog is starting to grow to the level I want it, I haven’t done enough to raise my profile or the blogs profile either.

This is why I’m happy I finally wrote my first guest post today. I wrote the post, entitled ‘Twitter Following Habits‘ at David Peralty’s great web development blog XFEP (Extra For Every Publisher). David gave me complete freedom over what I wrote and let me publish it when I want which is why I think I enjoyed writing it so much. Perhaps if I thought there was a good chance my post was going to be edited I would have felt under more pressure writing it. David seemed happy with the post and says he’s happy for me to post there whenever I want so I’ll probably write the odd guest post there from time to time.

I’m going to try and write some guest posts for some other blogs too. I know many bloggers know my BloggingTips site exists but I suspect many of them haven’t taken the time to read any of my posts there or any posts from the weekly authors. I’m sure that if I wrote a post on a blog they enjoy reading daily it would raise my profile and perhaps encourage some of them to check out my main blog. This is, afterall, one of the main reasons for guest posting on other blogs.

I was thinking of perhaps writing a post on BloggingTips saying that I’m available for guest posts for blogs with 500 or more (or perhaps 1,000) but I’m not sure thats the best thing to do. It’s perhaps better to just approach some bloggers directly and ask if they would like me to do a guest post sometime.

Regardless, I’ll let you know how the guest posting goes and also, if you’re a Twitter user, remember to check out my guest post Twitter Following Habits.

Although the internet has been around since the 70′s, it was on 30th April 1993 that Cern brought the world wide web to the public domain. I didn’t start using the internet regularly til my first year at uni in 1996.

When we first started we were all fascinated by what you could do in the web. There were old C64 roms available, chat rooms had thousands of people abusing each other verbally and Yahoo was just a directory.

It’s kind of hard to imagine some aspects of life without the internet now. I remember starting an office job in early 2000 and at the same time this really really geeky guy started. Infact, geeky isn’t the best way to describe him, he was just plain weird. I know that sounds mean but lets just say he wasn’t a people person. Anyways, whenever anyone asked him what he was doing at the weekend he would always say, I don’t know, I’ll check my emails. At the time this was very uncommon and I thought it was really sad.

Fast forward 8 years and most of my weekends are organised via email with friends. My how times have changed.

I wonder what the web will be like in 15 years – I doubt many aspects of it will be unrecognizable to todays web. Hopefully I’ll still be making a living through the net regardless

I posted last month that after selling my poker discussion forums I wasn’t sure what to call myself as the websites which I have left are nearly all blogs (apart from a few forums and article sites which still make me a little cash every month).

At the moment my main site is probably BloggingTips however I am looking to establish a UK tech blog and a joke blog. I don’t want to place all my eggs in one basket so I’ve been thinking of a non-blog website I could start. I’ve looked at various scripts and I’ve looked at a lot of other sites for inspiration however blogs still continue to sell very easily on SitePoint so I’m tempted to stick to blogs for the moment.

For example, JohnCow is currently for sale on SitePoint with a buy it now of $50k. Someone quickly offered the ‘Buy It Now’ price but it turned out to be a timewaster. Still, I reckon it will still sell for about $30k which is fantastic for a blog with 1600 subscribers.

Mark Wielgus wrote a post yesterday discussing this phenomemom and worked out that making money online blogs have been selling for an average of $18.42 per subscriber. I’m confused why these making money blogs are selling for thousands after just a month or two of posting. For example, RyanShamus.com had only 90 subscribers and sold for $2,500 and with only 200 subscribers, BloggingFingers managed to sell for $6,000. Have the buyers of these blogs wondered how they will break even with the site?

The reason this has surprised me is that some of these blogs were not even making any money. Also, it surprises me that people are paying more for this type of site than an online niche with higher commission levels (eg gambling). For example, I sold my poker discussion community for $40,000. It was making between $2,500-$3,000 a month and it had 17,000 members. It was an active community which had been established for around 4 years. Is a making online blog with 2,000 members worth the same amount? Personally I don’t think it is however the market tells a different story.

As someone with a blogging related website maybe I should be really happy with all these overinflated prices however I paid over the odds for a few websites in the past so I can’t help but feel for the people making the same mistakes I did. I have no intention to sell my blogging site in the next few years but no doubt if I did the market would collapse and this post will come back to haunt me!!!

Do you think these blogs are worth the money? What’s the most you would pay for a blog with 200 subscribers?

I am now looking to sell off websites which I own but no longer update or develop.

The first of these is FreerollForums.com. Freeroll Forums is a poker forum with 6000 members which at one point was incredibly busy however due to me travelling so much the last year or two the site has slowly rotted away. I do think that someone is going to get a bargain with this though as I’ve kept the sale price low.

The site is currently for sale at SitePoint. the min bid of $6,000 was met very quickly but since then, no bids have come in which has been a little disappointing. However, the auction does not end til Friday so hopefully there will be one or two more bids in. Worst case scenario, I just get $6,000 but i’m happy doing this as it means I can clear this from my portfolio and spend time developing a new site.

I’m also trying to sell an old arcade site I have called ArcadeStation

Hello and welcome to my first post for System0.net. System0 has been the landing page for all of my internet websites since 2002 however that is all it has been ie. the site had very little info and was not updated often.

Some months ago I considered launching my own personal blog. I am lucky enough to have the domain for my name (KevinMuldoon.com) and my initial thoughts were to host a blog there. I finally got serious about launching this blog a few weeks ago but my main concern was what would it be about. Whilst I would like to have a place to post some random views from time to time, for the most part posts would be related to web development. Last week I came to the conclusion that I should not use my name for my blog.

So what name would I use? Well, after a few days I quickly realised that a good internet domain is even harder to come by. I also realised how fussy I am about choosing a design for a site! After uploading and modifying over a dozen wordpress themes I decided to use the Bogart theme from Jim Mitchell. The design should hopefully be temporary but I’m pretty happy with the simplicity of it. It is also well commented so will be very easy to modify.

So what will the System0.net blog be about?

The site remains a place to list some of my web projects however the main area will be the blog (for now). I will be disussing what I do online, things that worked, things that didn’t. I don’t really want posts to be seen as a guide or whatever but I’m sure people can learn from what I go through (including my mistakes!!).

I also hope that the blog will raise my profile a little and make it easier to make contacts with other like minded web developers. Bear in mind though that I don’t expect to update this blog on a regular basis and I’ll maybe post some personal related posts every now and then too

Anyways, if you have any questions please let me know and I’ll do my best to answer them

Thanks,
Kevin Muldoon
